# GitHub code search

## What it is

> **REMOVED from Omniscio core (in-core GitHub detachment).** This built-in gh:\* GitHub
> feature has been removed; install the **github-integration** marketplace plugin for
> it. This page is kept for historical reference.

> **Status: the built-in GitHub feature is FULLY REMOVED (plugin-only).** The in-core code is gone — there is no longer any way to restore it (the old Settings > Lab > "Built-in GitHub (legacy)" toggle and the `AMC_SHOW_INCORE_GITHUB` env var no longer exist). It is superseded by the **GitHub Integration** marketplace plugin, which has full parity plus a codebase browser, a unified siderail, and a repo navigator. Install the plugin for GitHub features.

Search code across your GitHub repositories without leaving Omniscio, then open any match in the built-in file viewer.

## Where to find it

### Where

The "Code Search" tab in the left sidebar. It needs the GitHub CLI connection that GitHub Notifications, Pull Requests, and Issues already use.

## How it behaves

### Good to know

- GitHub's code search indexes each repository's default branch only, and skips very large files. If you expect a match on a feature branch, it will not appear.
- Private repositories need the repo permission. If results look incomplete, use "Grant access to private repositories" in the sidebar.
- Some matches legitimately arrive without a text snippet; the row then shows just the repository and path.
- If you hit the rate limit, Omniscio tells you roughly how long to wait. Searching again immediately will not help.
- Query syntax is GitHub's: quoted phrases and qualifiers like `language:ts` work as they do on github.com (the legacy code search syntax; regex is not supported).

## For agents

### How it works

1. Type a query, pick a scope, and press Search (or Enter). Searches run only when you submit: GitHub limits code search to about 10 requests per minute, so Omniscio never searches as you type.
2. Scope options: My repositories (repos you own), One organization (from your GitHub orgs), or One repository (pick from a list or type owner/repo).
3. Results show the repository, the file path, and the matched text. Clicking a result opens the file in the viewer, scrolled to the matching line. The viewer shows the exact version of the file the search index matched.
4. "Open on GitHub" is always available on a result, including when a file cannot be previewed.

## Related

GitHub features now reach Omniscio through the **GitHub Integration** marketplace plugin, which covers this and more: a codebase browser, a unified side rail and a repository navigator.
