# Supermail — Send Behaviors, Reply Focus & Rebindable Shortcuts

## What it is

How the Supermail composer behaves when you reply and send. All of this lives in the native
Supermail plugin ([supermail.md](supermail.md)); the invariants are locked by
`.claude/memory/contracts/supermail-send-shortcuts-contract.md`.

## Where to find it

Inside Supermail: the composer's send button and its ▾ menu, plus **Supermail's Settings → Composing → Sending** for the defaults.

## How it behaves

### Reply focus on `R`

Pressing **R** on an email opens the reply composer with the **cursor already in the reply box**
— you can type immediately. The email-navigation keys (**J / K**, and W/S with left-handed nav)
still work: they only stop while your cursor is actually in the box (there they type), and resume
the moment you press **Escape** to step out. So typing and navigating coexist without a mode.

### Three send behaviors

When you send a reply, one of three things happens:

- **Send & Archive** — archives the conversation and moves you to the next email. _(default)_
- **Send & Next** — moves you to the next email but leaves this one in the inbox.
- **Send & Stay** — just sends; you stay on the conversation.

The **Send button** does your default (Send & Archive out of the box). A small **▾ menu** beside it
lists all three with their current keys. Each behavior also has its own keyboard shortcut:

| Behavior | Default shortcut |
| ------------------------ | ------------------------ |
| Send & Archive (default) | Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + Enter |
| Send & Stay | Cmd/Ctrl + Enter |
| Send & Next | Cmd/Ctrl + Alt + Enter |

> Note: **Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + Enter** is your one-key **Send & Archive** — and since Send & Archive is
> the default action, the **Send button** does the same thing. A plain **Cmd/Ctrl + Enter** just sends
> and keeps you on the conversation. Prefer a different mapping? Reassign any of them below.

### Change the default + reassign keys

**Supermail's Settings → Composing → Sending**:

- **Default behavior** — a dropdown to pick which of the three the Send button does.
- **Shortcuts** — each behavior shows its current key with a **Change** button; press a new
combination to rebind it. A conflict with another shortcut is flagged and blocked; **Reset**
restores the default. Changes take effect immediately and persist. (Per-device.)

### Instant reply + undo

Your sent reply appears in the thread **immediately** (it no longer waits out the ~10-second
undo-send window). If you **Undo** the send within that window, the reply is removed and your
draft reopens exactly as you wrote it — and if the send also archived the conversation, that is
reversed and you're put back on it.

### How the composer looks — the "Calm" pass (2026-08-08)

A presentational pass over the reply composer. Nothing about sending, shortcuts, or drafts
changed; it is the same composer, quieter.

- **The body no longer wears a big accent box.** Focusing the message used to draw a 2px accent
outline — an indicator sized for a one-line input, stretched around a document-height area, in
the same accent as the Send button, so neither read as the primary thing on screen. The message
now shows a **quiet accent rail down its leading edge** instead — the same focus idiom the
focused inbox row already uses. Keyboard focus is still clearly indicated: it changed shape, it
was not removed. Ordinary fields (To, Subject, search boxes) keep their ring exactly as before.
- **The empty composer is no longer mostly empty.** It reserved a screenful of blank space before
you had typed a character; it now reserves about one paragraph and grows as you write.
- **The quoted original looks openable.** Collapsed, it sits on its own surface with a chevron, so
it reads as the message you are replying to rather than a title bar. Clicking still expands it.
- **Discard moved away from Attach.** The control that throws away your draft used to sit 12px
from the one that adds a file, both unlabeled icons. It now sits with the send actions on the
right. It was, and still is, confirmation-guarded.
- **The header shows both the mode and the subject.** A small "Reply" / "Reply All" / "Forward"
label sits above the subject headline, so you can see what you are doing and what it is about.
An email with no subject reads "(no subject)" rather than spending the headline on the word
"Reply". A brand-new message is unchanged — one headline, no label.
- **Fewer, softer divider lines**, so the composer reads as a message rather than a form.

### Scope

Desktop + touch (the reply-focus change is desktop-oriented; touch already focused the box). This
is the Supermail app's compose surface — separate from the "emails in the Omniscio inbox" inline
reply ([supermail-inbox-and-density.md](supermail-inbox-and-density.md)).
