Daily weather report
Turn it on, type your town, and a short forecast lands in your inbox every evening. If you don't open it, it tidies itself away later that night; if you do open it, it stays until you put it away. It's free, needs no account, and is off until you switch it on.
What it is
A small, optional card that tells you what the weather is doing tonight and tomorrow, plus a look at the next three days. Each card shows tonight's conditions, then tomorrow's high and low, the conditions, the chance of rain, the wind, and sunrise and sunset, and finally a three-day outlook.
The forecast comes from Open-Meteo, a free public weather service that asks for no account and no key. No AI is used, so it never costs anything. You get at most one card a day, and the card is deliberately short-lived: it exists to be glanced at, not kept.
Where to find it
Settings → Notifications → Daily weather report. Switch it on and these options appear:
- Place — type a town the way you'd say it, such as "Boulder, CO", or a ZIP code.
- Delivery time — when the card arrives. Default 6:00 PM.
- Archive if unopened at — when a card you never opened tidies itself away. Default 8:00 PM.
- Units — Fahrenheit with miles per hour, or Celsius with kilometres per hour.
- Send a test report — posts a card right now using the settings above, and tells you which place it found. If something is wrong it says so in plain words, for example "Couldn't find that place. Try adding a state or country."
The card shows up in your inbox like any other, on your desktop and on your phone.
How it behaves
- Arrives on time. While Omniscio is running, the card arrives within about a minute of your delivery time.
- If Omniscio was closed. If you open the app after the delivery time but before the tidy-up time, the card arrives right then. If you open it after the tidy-up time, that day is simply skipped — you won't get a card for an evening that has already passed.
- One card a day. Restarting or waking the computer never produces a second copy.
- Unopened cards tidy themselves. At your "Archive if unopened at" time, a card nobody opened is archived. If you opened it on either your desktop or your phone, it stays where it is. Only weather cards are ever tidied this way; nothing else in your inbox is touched. If you turn the report off, any unopened weather card still tidies itself away.
- If the forecast can't be fetched. You never get a blank or made-up forecast. Omniscio tries again every so often until your tidy-up time. The test button shows the exact reason.
- A tidy-up time earlier than the delivery time means the next day: a card delivered at 6:00 PM with a tidy-up of 5:00 PM is archived at 5:00 PM the following afternoon.
- Muting. The card type is called "Daily weather report". You can turn it off from a card's "Turn off these alerts" button or in Settings → Notifications → Alert types, the same as any other inbox card. A muted card is simply not shown.
- Privacy. The only things sent off your computer are the place name you typed and the coordinates it turns into. Nothing else about you is sent.
