Rename a session

Every session has a title you can change to anything up to 100 characters, from three places: right-clicking the title at the top of an open chat, the three-dot menu in the session header, or right-clicking the row in the sidebar. Renaming only changes the display name, it stops the automatic titler overwriting your own name, and it is undoable.

What it is

Every session has a title — the label you see at the top of the open chat and in the sidebar list. Omniscio auto-generates it from the first message, but you can rename it to anything you like (up to 100 characters). Renaming is a display-name change only: it does not touch the conversation, the folder, or the CLI process.

Once you rename a session by hand, Omniscio marks the title as manually set, so the automatic titler will not overwrite your name on later messages. Every rename is undoable with Ctrl+Z (it reverses your last session action, routed through the universal undo — see session-action-undo-contract.md).

Where to find it

There is no Rename screen — three places in the app do it. Right-click the title at the top of an open chat (a mouse gesture, so desktop only). Or open the session and use the ⋯ more-actions menu in its header, which is the route that also works on a phone. Or right-click a session row in the sidebar list.

How it behaves

How to use it

There are three ways to rename, all doing the same thing under the hood:

  1. Right-click the title at the top of the open chat. A small Rename menu appears at your cursor; click it and the title turns into an editable box, pre-filled and selected. Type the new name and press Enter (or click away) to save; Esc cancels. This is the quickest way when you already have the chat open. Desktop only — right-click is a mouse gesture, so on a phone use the ⋯ menu below.
  2. The ⋯ (more actions) menu in the session header. Open the session, click the three-dot menu in its header, and pick Rename (pencil icon). It drops you into the exact same inline edit box as the right-click above. This is the path that also works on mobile.
  3. Right-click the chat in the sidebar list. Right-click a single session row → Rename (single-selection only — a name targets one session). This opens a small Rename Session dialog whose text box is pre-filled with the current name and fully selected (same as the inline box above), so typing replaces it outright; click Save (or press Ctrl/Cmd+Enter) to commit. See bulk-select-sidebar.md for the rest of that menu.

An empty or unchanged name is a no-op — the session keeps its current title.

For agents

How it works

All three entry points funnel into the header's inline-rename state (startEditing → the header <input>) or the sidebar's RenameSessionDialog, and both commit through the same store action renameSession(id, name) → the session:rename IPC. Main-side, renameSessionWithEffects updates sessions.name, marks the title as manually generated so the auto-titler backs off, emits a SESSION_RENAMED push so every open panel updates live, and audit-logs the change. The header title's right-click menu reuses the shared context-menu scaffold (ContextMenuShell) and is locked by session-header-title-rename-contract.md; the sidebar path by session-context-menu-contract.md.
