Session cost, tokens and turns

A session shows what it cost and how much work it did: a cost figure in its header, token and turn totals in its menu, and a duration label on every turn. The duration label ticks live while a turn is running and freezes into a "took" badge once the turn settles.

What it is

Every session quietly accumulates a set of numbers that describe the work it did. This area is the map of those numbers and where they appear.

At the level of a single session there is a cost figure, shown as a chip in the session's header. It appears for every session, whether the provider bills per token or runs on a flat plan, so you are never left guessing. When a provider reports tokens but not a true dollar cost, the figure is marked as an estimate rather than presented as an invoice. The same session also carries token totals — how many tokens went in and how many came out — and a turn count, both shown in a small stats block in the session's menu.

Alongside the totals, each individual turn carries a duration label: a live ticker that counts up while the turn is running, which freezes into a settled "took this long" badge once the turn finishes. Around a conversation compaction, a rolled-up activity figure summarises the work between that divider and the previous one.

This area is the small, per-session half of a larger picture. The same underlying spend ledger feeds the app-wide statistics, the budget caps, the spend warnings and the context-window readout, and those are covered by their own pages below.

Where to find it

  • Open a session. Its header carries the cost chip; on hover it explains itself as the estimated session cost.
  • Open the session's menu (the ⋯ button in the panel header) to reach the Session Stats block with the cost, turn count and token totals.
  • The turn-duration labels sit directly on the message bubbles in the chat, and a rolled-up duration appears on the activity bubble beside each compact divider.
  • The wider figures — totals across all sessions, trends, budget caps and spend warnings — live in the Stats panel and the Cost Control row in the sidebar, and the context breakdown lives in the session's context popover.

How it behaves

  • Turn duration — the duration label on every turn: the live ticker, the frozen badge, and the rolled-up figure beside each compaction. This is the page that owns the turn-level timing.
  • Stats — the built-in panel that adds every session up: total spend, token usage, time, per-project breakdowns and trends.
  • Cost Control — the sidebar surface that puts live spend and every budget cap in one place, editable in line.
  • Context Details — the popover that breaks down what is filling a session's context window right now, in tokens.
  • AI spend alerts — the inbox cards Omniscio raises when your spend looks off, plus the optional daily summary.
  • Usage Forecast — plain-English estimates of when your accounts will run out, built from the same usage data.
  • Daily Spend Report — the bundled plugin that posts a single inbox card a day summarising what your agents produced and what it cost.

A few things worth knowing before you rely on these numbers. The cost chip shows for every session with no opt-in; a plan-billed session shows its figure exactly like a metered one, and only a provider that cannot report a real dollar cost gets the estimate marker. Token totals are abbreviated for readability, so a large count is shown rounded rather than to the last digit. The rolled-up duration beside a compaction deliberately counts only active work and skips the idle gaps between turns, so a session you walked away from overnight does not inflate that figure.
