Layout Mods (reshape the sidebar and session list)

Settings → Appearance → Layout Mods lets you reshape the projects sidebar and the session list by picking a preset and fine-tuning it. "Reset your changes" puts one surface back; Safe Mode puts everything back; a layout that breaks is reverted for you automatically.

What it is

Layout Mods are ready-made layouts for two parts of the app that you can then adjust to taste:

  • Projects sidebar — presets Standard (the normal list), Compact Rail (a slim strip of project icons) and Labeled Rail (the same strip with names beside the icons). You can also set the Style yourself: Classic list or Slim rail. While the style is Slim rail you get two more controls — Row size and Show project names — which only affect the rail, so they are hidden for the Classic list.
  • Session list — presets Standard and Calm List (tighter rows, no status badges), plus Row size (Roomier / Compact) and Show status badges (the small SSH, recipe and worktree icons on each row).

Every control is a fixed choice, never a free-form size, so a layout can only take shapes that were designed and tested.

Where to find it

Open Settings → Appearance and choose the Layout Mods tab. It is available to everyone; there is nothing to switch on in the Lab first. Searching Settings for "layout" also lands on it.

How it behaves

Changes apply instantly. Reset your changes appears once you have tuned a surface and removes your tuning for that surface only, keeping its preset. Safe Mode (use standard layouts), at the bottom of the card, puts every surface back to its standard layout no matter what is selected and locks the other controls until you turn it off — use it if anything looks wrong. If a layout ever crashes, Omniscio clears that surface's preset and your tuning for it, shows a short warning, and leaves one inbox notice ("A layout mod was turned off"); your other surface is left alone.

The one limit worth knowing: only the built-in presets exist for now — there is no way to install presets made elsewhere yet.

For agents

The card is src/renderer/src/features/settings/AppearanceLayoutModsCard.tsx; the platform lives in src/shared/mods/. Settings keys: activeLayoutModBySurface, layoutOverridesBySurface, modsSafeMode. The feature id mods-platform is shipped, so modsPlatformEnabled no longer gates anything. Invariants: .claude/memory/contracts/mods-platform-contract.md.
