The Free plan's task limit

When plan limits are switched on, a Free account holds up to 100 unfinished tasks, and finishing, archiving or deleting a task frees a slot. Reaching the limit opens a "Milestone achieved!" pop-up with two ways forward: tidy up, or see the upgrade. Paid plans have no task limit, and while plan limits are off nothing is counted at all.

What it is

Only unfinished tasks fill a slot. Every task a person adds or says yes to counts: typed in, added from Quick Launch, duplicated, made from a session, imported, added by an agent, kept from Caught, or accepted from a breakdown, Plan My Day or Plan chat. The next copy of a repeating task and a task restored from the archive or trash are never refused. At the limit a flashcard session runs without its review task.

A batch, such as an import or a multi-add, that would go past the limit is refused whole, so you never end up with half an import. An import that includes already-finished tasks needs one spare slot while it runs, because each finished task is added and then ticked off.

Where to find it

You only see it at the limit. The pop-up appears wherever you were adding a task in Tasks, including the Tasks panel in Mission Control. Help me archive things opens the Clean up panel inside Tasks; Tell me about the upgrade opens Settings → Plan & Usage, which shows the plans and their prices.

How it behaves

The pop-up reads: "You've created 100 Tasks so far. Archive/Complete a task to free up some task slots, or consider upgrading for unlimited task storage." It is a milestone, not an error, so no error message appears with it. The text you were typing stays in the add box, so nothing is lost. A stray Enter does not press either button; the upgrade button uses the usual Ctrl+Enter.

The Clean up panel lists your oldest untouched unfinished tasks: top-level ones that are not on today's plate, at most 50. Each row shows the task, its project, how long since it was touched and its open sub-task count, with a Complete and an Archive button. Tick several and use Complete selected or Archive selected. Archiving a task with sub-tasks frees all of their slots at once. Space ticks the focused row.

Quick Launch, which is its own small window, shows the limit sentence instead of the pop-up.
